 “When the Troops Come Home” is the title of OMNI-NWACC’s new Culture of Peace film series. The program is intended to build awareness for the needs of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and their families. The sequence of film screenings and discussions explore the enormous challenges that these young men and women and their loved ones face. Scheduled from 6:30-9:00 p.m. in Room 108 of the Student Center at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville, the program features these documentaries:

  • March 10th –- The Battlefield Experience: “Combat Diary: The Marines of Lima Company” (90 min). This film takes viewers to the front lines of battle with one of the hardest hit Marine units of the Iraq war. It provides a first-hand account of the realities of war as it is waged today.
     

  • April 14thThe Rehabilitation Process: “Body of War: The Story of an Anti-War Hero” (90 min). This documentary tells the story of Tomas Young, a 25 year-old, disabled, Iraq war veteran, who was paralyzed from the chest down from a bullet to his spine during his first week in Iraq. The film reveals how he came to terms with is disability and made the decision to speak out against the war.
     

  • April 28thThe Families Left Behind: “Last Letters Home: Voices of American Troops from the Battlefields of Iraq” (60 min.). This documentary reveals both the pride and the pain of family members as they read the last letters sent to them from loved ones who lost their lives in Iraq.

Following the films, representatives from the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks, community grief counselors, and local peace advocates are expected to participate in discussions about the need to provide services to veterans and to bring peace to the Middle East. 

Dr. Robert C. Mock, Jr., Assistant Vice Chancellor at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, will join the group on April 28 and offer his insights on how to meet the needs of returning soldiers in the classroom and in the community.
